Goal setting is very important for sport, personal life & business. If you don’t know where you are going, you won’t know when or even if you get there!

I recommend and use the SMART System :
1) Set goals
2) Make a plan to achieve your goals
3) Do the work and be consistent
4) Review and reset your goals over time

See the 2 attachments to this post for my full brief.

Be SMART about setting goals …

Specific : Have a single clear description of the goal – set a PB in my 100m sprint

Measurable : have a value (set short term goals that help you achieve long term goals) – improve my PB in 100m sprint by 0.3s

Attainable : goals should be reachable but make you stretch to achieve them – you wouldn’t set a target so difficult that it is almost impossible to achieve

Relevant : Goals should be relevant to what you are training towards – set goals that help your performance or skill

Time limit : Set a time period to achieve the goal within
- improve my PB in 100m sprint by 0.3s by the end of the season

Other important points
- write your goals down (review them often to keep motivated and focused) – try to make your goals positive (set goals that motivate you)
- be flexible (adjust goals if necessary. If you reach your goal early – reset it!) – be careful when setting goals that rely on other people’s performance
(beating a particular person, making a team, winning an important race)
