10k race on Sunday 8th June - feedback and Q&A

8 Mar by David Webster
Thank you to all who responded to our survey on the planned 10k race. If you haven’t already, feel free to keep responding at https://forms.gle/oRAxCzs6rs1Pk2CfA

Following discussions with the Council and the police, we are going to move the start forward so that it’s past the St Vincent St junction (this means adding 100m or so to the out and back section on the way back). They otherwise have no objections. We have also agreed to ensure there are plenty of marshalls and signage. Our next step is to contact a course measurer, so it will be a certfied 10k course. We are also getting in touch with PRR and the Hawks to call for runners for our trial event on 8th June.

In terms of survey responses:

13 people are willing to be volunteers as well as an additional 8 who are maybes but can’t commit yet. In addition to the committee, this gives us about 25-30 volunteers so far.
TeamApp seems to be preferred to Messenger for communications, but WhatsApp is also popular and may be an alternative tool for on the day communication?

We received the following suggestions for naming the race – Dundee 10k, Tayside 10km, Dundee Dash, Ferry to the ‘fieth, Race to the Castle, 10k Broughty Ferry Castle Race, The Better Tay Ten, Tayside Coastal 10k, World’s Flattest 10k, Tayshore 10k, Tayshore Dash, Broughty Breeze, Castle & Coast, Rundee, Tay Estuary 10. All unique suggestions except Dundee 10k came up twice. Let us know what you think!

Questions were asked on the following topics:

- Start in Monifieth instead of the Ferry (parking, wind direction better)?
We did consider this, but we think that with our plans to develop it into a community/mass-participation event, the Ferry gives a better atmosphere and base for the race. The Ferry is also better for public transport and we will look into options such as schools for parking next year when we hope to run it with more participants. Starting on the path from the Ferry also means we have wider paths towards the start, with the narrower bits around Monifieth coming once the field has spread out.

- Post race food/refreshments/shelter
Yes, we intend to have a spread similar to Templeton 10 and will be asking for your support with this! We’re looking into options for halls in the Ferry.

- How many runners?
100-150 for the test event this year. No set number for the future, hopefully it will build up over time, but substantially more than the 250 places we have for T10.

- Will participants wear race numbers?
Yes, including for the test event this year.

- Pacers?
Definitely in our plan for next year at least – flat and windy courses is exactly when you want pacers. Maybe if we have spare volunteers we could even consider it this year.

- Marshall roles – lead bike, volunteers well-briefed
Yes, the lead bike(s) will be particularly important on a course like this. We will make sure volunteers are well-briefed, we’ve learned a lot from Tay 10/Brig Bash etc. as to how they do it.

- Likely complaints/issues from dog walkers/other locals
We’ll make sure to advertise the event as widely as possible and communicate with community groups. We’re starting early (9am) so that it’s not peak time, but appreciate it can be busy even at that time.

Thanks to all who responded!
